Ruckage Design Co. Pays Homage to Tuskegee Airmen with Jean Jackets

A new jacket collection by Ruckage Design Co. culls inspiration from the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black pilots and airmen who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

The Ruckage Denim Collection blends the structure of military uniforms with the versatility and comfort of denim. Each design integrates elements from Tuskegee Airmen’s uniforms and aircraft.

“The Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy is a profound testament to courage, resilience, and breaking barriers. Their story has been a personal inspiration, and I sought to honor their contributions by creating a collection that reflects their distinguished service and the rich history of African American aviators. This endeavor aims to celebrate their achievements and ensure their legacy continues to inspire future generations,” said Darryl Bordenave, Ruckage Desgin Co. founder and CEO.

The collection includes the General, a white jacket with a layered neckline and oversized patch pockets; the Airman, a sleek futuristic jacket embellished with buttons and straps in black; the Commando, a burgundy jacket with shimmery shank buttons; the Ranger, a two-tone brown jacket with a long point collar, layered back yoke and kangaroo pockets; and the Navigator, a jacket with an abstract winged back that represents flight.

Bordenave said design details like shoulder and chest straps, layered necklines, oversized patch pockets and holster flaps are “thoughtfully integrated to reflect the precision, honor, and resilience emblematic of the Tuskegee Airmen.”

Most jackets are made with 9-12 oz. bull brushed denim. The Navigator is made with 10 oz. indigo denim. “These materials were selected for their durability, texture, and ability to hold intricate designs, ensuring each piece is both functional and aesthetically pleasing,” Bordenave said.

The Ruckage Denim Collection is available made to order. Retail prices range from $1,500 to $2,500, depending on the fabrics selected. “Each piece is a statement of luxury and individuality, with clients having the option to elevate their design with premium materials like rich leathers, supple suedes, and other high-end textiles to create a truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece,” Bordenave said.

The collection will be displayed at the art gallery at Bloomingdale’s in Lenox Square in Atlanta through March 31. The exhibition is part of a collaboration between Bloomingdale’s and Atlanta Fashion Week to provide a national platform for innovative creatives and emerging talent.

The Ruckage Denim Collection is the first installment of a two-part series that pays homage to the spirit of aviation. The second drop, the American Flight Collection, will debut later this year at the American Flight Fashion Art Exhibition.
