Levi’s Launches Reproductions of Vintage Sonic Youth Tees

Sonic Youth, the New York City-based alternative rock band from the ’80s, is the latest band to get the Levi’s treatment.

On Thursday, the denim brand launched the Levi’s x Sonic Youth Band Tee Collection, a line of reproductions of rare, vintage tees.

Sonic Youth split in 2011 but the band’s influence on rock remains strong with founding member Kim Gordon receiving her first Grammy nominations last year for her solo album “The Collective,” Levi’s stated. Band members Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley also continue influence the genre.

Over time, Levi’s said demand for Sonic Youth’s “bold, eccentric” merchandise has increased. Each of the collection’s tees faithfully reproduces iconic merchandise from Sonic Youth’s heyday. The collection includes five total designs: the bomb pop print on a white tee, the washing machine print on a black tee, the animal grid print a white tee, the bunny print offered on a white tee, and the iconic dirty alien print on a hunter green tee.

To ensure as much accuracy as possible, Levi’s made sure the shading and color of each tee were matched to the original. Additionally, the shirts’ interior neck labels are inspired by ’90’s era woven labels, adding another period correct element to the collection.

“Levi’s has always been rooted in music,” said Leo Gamboa, senior director of global collaborations and customization design at Levi’s. “We wanted to bring back the vibe of your favorite Sonic Youth band tee—authentic, timeless, and made with quality that lasts for years to come.”

Levi’s has been plugging to Gen X bands’ fanbases. The brand debuted the Levi’s Band Tee Collection last August, beginning with an Oasis collection of tees. A second collection of New Order tees launched in November.
