‘The Lion King’ Sequel Gets Disney+ Release Date

Disney has announced a streaming date for Mufasa: The Lion King. Directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa is a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, itself a remake of the 1994 animated classic. The film follows the brotherhood between a young Mufasa and Taka, who later becomes Scar, and it lands on Disney+ on March 26.

The film stars Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, with Blue Ivy Carter making her voice acting debut as Kiara. The score was composed by Dave Metzger, while Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote original songs for the soundtrack.

When Will Mufasa Be Streaming?

Disney announced that Mufasa will be streaming on March 26. Additionally, fans of physical media can now preorder the Blu-ray, including the 4K and Steelbook versions, on retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The disc drops on April 1.

Ahead of the film’s release, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes clip featuring director Barry Jenkins and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda exclusively with Rolling Stone. The clip will be included as part of the behind-the-scenes extras for the film’s digital and physical release. You can check it out below.

In the clip, Miranda discusses writing “I Always Wanted A Brother,” saying that the inspiration came from the script, which was “so clear.”

Mufasa: The Lion King serves a sequel and prequel to 2019’s The Lion King. The original 1994 film was followed by two direct-to-video sequels, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 1½ (2004).
