iOS 18.4—The iPhone Passwords App Just Got A Cool New Feature

Apple’s iOS 18.4 upgrade is due to arrive in April, along with some very cool new features and security updates. One of the best new capabilities coming in iOS 18.4 is an update to Apple’s Passwords app that allows you to see when verification codes will expire and refresh.

Shared by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris on X and reported by Apple-focused site 9to5Mac, the new iOS 18.4 feature is called Countdown. And that is, quite literally what it does to verification codes inside Apple’s Passwords app—it counts down via a visual timer that appears in the top right hand corner.

The Countdown feature in iOS 18.4 looks like a ring that fills in with green so you can see how much time is left on your verification codes. Once the green has filled the circle completely, you know your codes will now expire and reset. It can also be viewed inside the details of a specific password entry, with any containing a verification code including the expiration timer, 9to5Mac writes.

The iOS 18.4 Passwords Countdown feature is not just available on your iPhone and iPad—it is also included in macOS Sequoia 15.4 and works inside the Passwords’ Menu Bar app.

Why You Should Use Apple’s Passwords App

Apple’s Passwords app is very cool and it’s leagues better than the iCloud Keychain in place before. I’ve been using it since its launch in iOS 18 and have had no issues with passwords syncing between devices—which was sometimes a problem previously.

At a time when people are having to remember multiple complex passwords across many sites, password managers are essential. If you own Apple devices, it makes sense to use the Passwords app, along with its very useful new Countdown feature.

Apple’s iOS 18.4 should be here in just over a month and it will likely be the iPhone maker’s next update—unless it issues an important security upgrade in the meantime. The iOS 18.4 upgrade is also set to include more AI-based Siri enhancements including on screen awareness—although its possible these may get pushed to iOS 18.5 due in May.
